Kitchen display system (KDS)
A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen in the kitchen that shows incoming orders and lets cooks mark each one as it is prepared, in place of paper tickets.
Orders reach the kitchen display the moment they are placed at the counter, by a waiter or from a self-order kiosk. Cooks see what to make and in what order, and update the status as they work. Front-of-house screens show the change live, so nobody has to walk to the pass and ask.
Most kitchen displays split the work by station, such as grill, fryer or bar, so each cook can find their own items. Many also track status per item rather than per order, which helps when a starter is ready long before a main course. A printed kitchen order ticket can still sit alongside the screen as a backup.
A KDS can run on dedicated hardware or, with browser-based systems, on any tablet, PC or TV that has a web browser.
Example
A café in Thamel mounts a tablet in the kitchen. A kiosk order for two lattes and a sandwich arrives: the lattes appear under the Bar station and the sandwich under Kitchen, and the barista and the cook each mark their own items ready.
KalasOS specifics
In KalasOS, the kitchen display is the Kitchen screen on your venue's subdomain. It shows a column per kitchen station, moves each item from pending to preparing to ready, shows each item's special requests, and sorts priority orders to the top. It runs in any recent browser and needs an internet connection.
